PRIORITY DEADLINE APPROACHINGEighth grade students who complete the application process by November 1st and sit for the Saint Mark's High School Placement Test (HSPT) on November 11th or 12th will meet the criteria for a priority review. These students may expect to receive a decision letter over Christmas break.The Saint Mark's priority deadline for Class of 2028 applications, grants, and financial aid applications is November 1st. Merit-based and specialty scholarship applications (categorical awards) are due this day, as well. Please note, merit-based/specialty scholarship applications will not be accepted after November 1.Saint Mark's High School is honored to experience a 65% increase in enrollment over the past four years. Due to the immense interest in Saint Mark's High School, students who fail to meet the Class of 2028 application due date of November 1st, or do not take the Saint Mark's High School Placement Test (HSPT) on November 11th or 12th, will receive a status, regarding their candidacy as a student, on a rolling basis. Ron Lieber of the NY Times uses ideas from my first book (Why Does College Cost so Much?) in his excellent article on sticker prices at elite institutions. The main point, which so many people are missing because they only scan the headline, is that these wild sticker prices only affect the very wealthy and only at the most selective private institutions in the US. Our concern as a nation should be on creating access AND quality at the institutions that educate the bulk of America's college students. We start talking to students and parents in the Pedrozzi Young Scholars Program about college prep courses — known as A-G — required for admission to California’s public universities, when the students are in 6th grade. Why so early? Middle school is a great time for students to start learning how to set academic goals and challenge themselves academically. Doing so helps prepare them to hit the ground running in high school. One of our mantras is that high school graduation requirements are not the same as college admission requirements. Armed with this knowledge and our support throughout high school, students in the program have a clear road map to follow to complete the A-G courses by senior year. Doing so expands their post-secondary options.

🎓 California is poised to make sweeping changes to its signature higher education access program, the Cal Grant.💡 In this op-ed in The San Diego Union-Tribune, college presidents Mark David Milliron at National University and Mark Sanchez, Ed.D. at Southwestern College urge California lawmakers to expand the Cal Grant state aid program to better meet the needs of the new majority of learners. 📣 They make the case that California's investments in higher education have powered generations of economic growth, innovation, and upward mobility since the creation of the Master Plan for Higher Education. As a Dual Enrollment practitioner for over a decade, I firmly believe that students of the Central Valley deserve an opportunity at higher education. Students need to be made aware of their choices and parents needs to be informed. College is not for everyone and that is ok. I work hard to ensure students know they have a choice and that choice can be determined in high school. #Equity #FirstGeneration #CADualEnrollment #DualEnrollmentWorks

What is preposterous to me is that the Department of Education has offered no evidence or examples in their defense of eliminating these course materials intervention models.Decades of research has proven that the "student choice" model of course materials acquisition does not work. It presents insurmountable barriers for millions of students.#InclusiveAccess and #EquitableAccess tore down the systemic institutional barriers to higher education that have prevented underrepresented student populations from accessing higher education and pursing their American Dream.Are these models perfect? No, but tell me what model is? If given the chance to provide a helping hand to 80-90% of students in higher education or letting 100% of them fend for themselves, I will always choose the former. What I know to be true from my work with hundreds of campuses is that Inclusive and Equitable Access have given students more access to course materials, more affordable choices, and more opportunity to prove their ability in the classroom and rather than their resourcefulness to get into it."The thing that is rare is #opportunity, not #ability" - Lester Frank Ward
