Stock for stock, they're nothing alike. SCX-10 has much more ability to do things/make stuff.
3 speed transmission on the Hi Lift is cool for a few, until you notice you're constantly getting hung up on the skid plate. And it weighs a scale ton.
Leafs are cool for a while, but get beat and bent. Shocks are a joke.
Fun for a bit, but not anywhere near as capable in performance as the SCX-10.

Compare ring and pinion gear options. Steering options.
Compare shock options. And spring options.
Compare transmission parts options. (though the Tamiya is stout as heck)
I went to a RC4WD R2 for ground clearance after the 3 speed novelty wore off.

Tamiya is good for those that already have everything. That's how I see them now.

The $250 is a great price for the highlift, but it will not come close to comparing to the SCX10. I am a tamiya guy tried and true, but when it comes to overall performance, axial wins hands down. I have 4-5 highlifts and my tundra has the most mods with powerstroke shocks, 4 link suspension, skid plates, etc. Even with all the mods, it will just about keep up with a stock scx10. I am not sure you would ever get a modified highlift to keep up with a modified scx10. On that note, the highlift is a ton of fun to drive and looks better than the scx10.

I am in the process of building a more capable crawler out of a highlift for slow-go, link , http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/1-9-scale-rigs/395168-project-flexy-highlift.html We are using Wk axles for a wider stance and 4linking it w coilovers, the only things out of the highlift I am using really is the trans, 3speed heehee, and the drive shafts. When it is done it will probably out crawl an scx10, but no guarantees.
Looking at the two scalelike preformance go highlift, preformance Scx10.
And the guy prob only drove it a couple of times because he became disgusted at how tippy it was.

I recently purchased a high lift off Craigslist for $250. It came RTR with 2 lipos and a ton of extra stuff. I'm running a 21T motor, SCX10 transmission, and high lift axles. It doesn't get hung up as much with the bulky 3 speed out of it, but it definitely doesn't perform like my friends slightly modded SCX10. It's my first RC and I love the leaf spring look but am growing tired of rolling over already. And I've only had it about a week lol. All in all, I love this rig and will keep on thrashing it but I will be purchasing an SCX10 very soon.

My first scale rig back into the game after my high school days in the 80's playing with Buggies was a Tamiya HL. As I had a Bruiser it seemed like a natural progression.. However out of the box it looked great but crawled terrible. If I had known about the Axial range of trucks I wouldn't have bothered with the HL.
Now some time has passed I have modded nearly every part of the HL in some way and it crawls great and can go alot of places my SCX10 can go but not in a competition event and is one of my favourite rigs. Out of the box the SCX10 will be more fun unless you like the tinkering and modifying aspect if the hobby. I would say the SCX10 first, HL 2nd in my order of purchase. I do comp my HL in Class 1 scale locally and christianise spec levels it goes well but the steering Sux.

The Tamiya High Lifts are cool scalers for looks and the ability to make them realistic. It all depends on what your looking to do. The SCX10 is ok for scale looks too, but more functional off road.

I've got both & that sums it up. I just don't drive mine anymore. If you want the best of both, get a TF2. Sounds like your set on the highlift though.

Although ive modded mine a whole bunch, I would not trade it for anything. It's a fun truck and keeps you entertained.

By the time you buy it and have to mod it to be as capable as a scx10, you should just buy another scx10. Now if your really set on "I have to have it" then yes, price wise its good but that's as far as it goes. If your wanting a scale crawler, save up for a trail finder 2. If you wan a scale apearing crawler that does great, scx10 is the best bet. The hilifts imo are shelf kings. They look cool but not that great on the trails from what I've seen. Now there is guys that built some good ones but are in it some serious cash.
