The Shadow Chest is a storage item which is found only in The Underworld, generally on top of or within Ruined Houses, and contains rare items. All Shadow Chests are initially locked, requiring a Shadow Key to open. The key is not consumed when used. The Shadow Key is an item used solely to open Shadow Chests found scattered in the Underworld and Obsidian Lock Boxes found from Obsidian and Hellstone Crates. It does not stack and is not consumed upon use; one Shadow Key can be used to open unlimited Shadow Chests. It can be found in Special Chests within the Dungeon (Gold Chests, Water Chests or Biome Chests), or from Golden Lock Boxes(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) found in Dungeon and Stockade Crates. On the Nintendo 3DS version, it has a 75% chance to drop from Arch Wyverns.

To open a Shadow Chest, the player will need a Shadow Key, which can open an unlimited amount of Shadow Chests without being consumed. Once a Shadow Chest is unlocked and emptied, it can be picked up after being broken down with a Pickaxe. Shadow Keys can be obtained from chests in the Dungeon, or rarely in underground chests.

The Underworld (also known as Hell) is the deepest layer of the world.
