Largest animal on Earth seen off the coast of Massachusetts in rare double sighting
One of nature's most awe-inspiring creatures, the rare and giant blue whale, was seen off the coast of Massachusetts in a rare back-to-back sighting. Cape Ann Whale Watch, a touring group based in Gloucester, Massachusetts, took to Facebook on Monday to share footage of one of two blue whale sightings that day. "We got to see this 'largest animal on our planet' on both of our trips today," the group wrote alongside footage of the blue whale spouting water and breaching to the surface.

Man fatally shot by park rangers at Yellowstone National Park allegedly threatened mass shooting
A 28-year-old man who worked for a business in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming allegedly threatened to carry out a mass shooting before being killed in a shootout with rangers on the Fourth of July, officials said Tuesday. Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, of Milton, Florida, was confronted by Yellowstone law enforcement rangers early on the morning of July 4 while allegedly shooting a semi-automatic rifle toward a dining facility at Canyon Village, according to NPS. Approximately 200 people were in the facility at the time, NPS said in an update on the incident Tuesday.

Delaware police investigating alleged officer assault of woman during traffic stop
A Delaware woman who was allegedly assaulted by New Castle County police during a traffic stop on June 29 gave her first public comments Tuesday about the stop and her arrest. Bystander and police body camera video show N'Finitee Coleman being detained by four officers in a parking lot where she was stopped by police. "My hair was pulled up and down," Coleman said during Tuesday's press conference.

Pastor facing federal charge after allegedly assaulting his wife over flight upgrade
The incident allegedly occurred on July 2 on board an Alaska Airlines flight from Seattle to Anchorage, Alaska. According to the complaint, Roger Allan Holmberg, Sr. and his wife were traveling for an event related to their ministry. Holmberg allegedly handed his phone to his wife from the aisle while telling her to read it and gestured with his middle finger, according to the complaint.

Military pier off Gaza likely to cease operations in coming days: US officials
The U.S. military's temporary pier will be reattached to a beach in Gaza on Wednesday and will likely be removed permanently a few days later, three U.S. officials told ABC News. The $230 million pier system, known as Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS), had been authorized to remain operational in Gaza through July 31 and, despite U.S. officials openly discussing it remaining operational beyond that date, it now appears it will cease operation before even reaching the end of the month. The three U.S. officials told ABC News the pier will be reattached to the beach just southwest of Gaza City on Wednesday and that after a few days of operations to transport humanitarian aid from Cyprus, the pier will likely be shut down for good.

Scientists made an exciting -- and pungent -- announcement about a nearby exoplanet this week, finding that a planetary body with a likeness to Jupiter smells of rotten eggs. Analyzing data gathered by the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists discovered that an exoplanet named HD 189733 b contains hydrogen sulfide, a colorless gas emitted by decaying organic matter with a strong, egg-like odor.

Colorado public health officials confirm human plague case in the state
Colorado public health officials have confirmed a human case of plague in a Pueblo County resident, according to the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment. Plague is very rare, with an average of seven human plague cases reported annually in the U.S., according to the CDC. While the disease killed millions of people in Europe during the Middle Ages, nowadays, it is a rare cause of illness in rural areas of the southwestern U.S., particularly in New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, the agency said.

A new tour of Buckingham Palace gives the public the first-ever look inside the room where members of Britain's royal family gather before stepping onto the palace's famous royal balcony. The balcony is where royal family members including King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate gather to wave to the public on occasions like coronations, jubilees and Trooping the Colour. Only members of the royal family are allowed to stand on the balcony, and prior to the new palace tour that begins July 15, no member of the general public had come as close to the balcony since it was built 175 years ago.

Jury selected as Alec Baldwin goes on trial over deadly 'Rust' shooting
The jury has been selected in Alec Baldwin's manslaughter trial in connection with the 2021 fatal shooting of a crew member on the set of "Rust" in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The actor was practicing a cross-draw in a church on the set of the Western film when the Colt .45 revolver fired a live round, fatally striking 42-year-old cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Baldwin, 66, who was also a producer on the film, was indicted by a grand jury on involuntary manslaughter in connection with Hutchins' death earlier this year after prosecutors previously dropped the charge.

No criminal charges will be filed in connection with a deadly National Guard helicopter crash that occurred near the U.S.-Mexico border in March. The Starr County Sheriff's Office in Texas has closed its investigation into the March 8 incident, which involved a UH-72 Lakota chopper assigned to Washington, D.C.'s Army National Guard. "No criminality was found," Major Carlos Delgado of the Starr County Sheriff's Office told ABC News by email.

Why 538's forecast hasn't moved much post-debate
According to 538's average, former President Donald Trump's margin in national polls has grown by just about 2 percentage points since June 27, when President Joe Biden delivered a poor performance in the cycle's first presidential debate. Biden's current 2.1-point deficit is the worst position for a Democratic presidential candidate since early 2000, when then-Vice President Al Gore was badly lagging Texas Gov. George W. Bush, according to our retroactive polling average of that race. On debate day, we gave Biden a 50-out-of-100 chance of winning the majority of Electoral College votes.

"We have not observed a shift in Russia's preferences for the presidential race from past elections, given the role the U.S. is playing with regard to Ukraine and broader policy toward Russia," according to an Office of the Director of National Intelligence official. A deputy U.S. Marshal allegedly shot an 18-year-old who tried to carjack him while he was on guard outside a Supreme Court justice's home in Washington, D.C., according to officials. The shooting unfolded outside of the apartment where Justice Sonia Sotomayor lives, according to public records. Two deputy Marshals were parked in separate cars when, at about 1:15 a.m. Friday, the suspect approached one of the Marshals and pointed a handgun at him in an apparent carjacking attempt, according to D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department.

Yale releases report critical of UK transgender youth care research study
A new report released by Yale Law School and Yale School of Medicine criticizes the often-cited Cass Review on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, commissioned by the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom. The review, released in April, was performed by Dr. Hillary Cass, a former president of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, amid a rise in referrals to NHS' gender services. At least 25 states have enacted restrictions on care for transgender youth since 2022, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Remnants of Hurricane Beryl move north as Texas recovers from deadly storm
At least eight people were killed when Hurricane Beryl tore through Texas and Louisiana on Monday, including a civilian employee of the Houston Police Department who drove into flood conditions on the way to work, officials said. Houston is in recovery mode after the core of Hurricane Beryl passed very closed to downtown, with wind gusts over 80 mph that caused massive power outages. There are still 2 million customers in Texas facing power outages Tuesday afternoon.
